Audit access before optimizing content

Access failures are blockers. A page that can't be fetched or rendered can't be quoted in an AI answer, which means every hour spent rewriting that page returns nothing until the access problem is gone. So the audit starts at the server and works inward.

The sharpest access problem right now is rendering. Vercel and MERJ's joint analysis of over 500 million GPTBot fetches found zero evidence of JavaScript execution, and the same pattern held for ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. WordPress escapes this because PHP templates render server-side, but headless builds and React-based page builders will hide your best answers, along with tab or accordion blocks that inject content on click.

That's the part worth sitting with. Your page can rank fine in Google and still be a blank shell to the systems generating answers about your category. Googlebot renders. The AI crawlers don't, so Google performance tells you nothing about AI accessibility.

Can crawlers reach priority pages?

Check reachability on the twenty or thirty pages that actually earn revenue or establish expertise. Pull your robots.txt and confirm the XML sitemap lists live canonical URLs, then verify HTTP 200 responses and check whether your security plugin or content delivery network (CDN) is challenging AI user agents.

Bot management rules are the quiet killer here. Cloudflare, Wordfence, and similar tools ship with defaults that block or rate-limit unfamiliar agents, so GPTBot gets a 403 while your visitors see nothing wrong.

Stale URLs waste what little attention you get. Vercel measured that 34.82% of ChatGPT's fetches returned 404 errors, mostly old links and outdated asset paths. When a third of a crawler's requests to your site hit nothing, the budget it spends on you is landing on dead ends instead of the service page you want cited. Fix your sitemap and redirect chains before you write another word.

Are the right pages indexable?

Separate the exclusions you chose from the ones a plugin chose for you. WordPress generates tag archives and author archives, along with date archives and attachment pages, and most of those should stay out of the index. What shouldn't stay out is a product page carrying a leftover noindex from staging or a canonical pointing at the homepage because a theme option was misread.

Open the Page Indexing report in Google Search Console and read the Not Indexed reasons one at a time. Matthew Edgar's analysis of roughly fifty websites found that 26.64% of pages were excluded because they were pages with a redirect, far more common than any other single reason.

Redirect-heavy exclusion patterns matter more than they look. Since AI systems draw heavily on existing search indexes, a URL that only exists as a redirect target in your sitemap or internal links is a URL that never enters the corpus an answer engine samples from. Point your links at final destinations.

Clear pages are easier to interpret

One page, one primary purpose. Retrieval systems split your content at heading boundaries and label each chunk with the nearest heading, so a page that answers four unrelated questions produces four weak chunks instead of one strong one. Titles and H2s carry that labeling work.

Generic headings break the labeling. Siteimprove's analysis of heading hierarchy and AI extraction notes that when you skip a level from H2 straight to H4, the parser guesses wrong half the time about where that content belongs. A site with dozens of chunks all titled "Overview" collides with itself.

WordPress adds its own noise. Themes wrap widget titles and sidebar labels in H2 or H3 tags, along with footer column headers, so your carefully structured article competes with "Recent Posts" and "Categories" for structural weight. Inspect the rendered HTML of one page per template and change the headings that aren't content to styled divs or paragraphs. It's a theme-level fix that improves every page at once.

Entity signals must stay consistent

Your organization needs one name, spelled one way, everywhere on the site. When your About page says one thing, your footer another, and your author bios a third, AI systems have to pick a version or hedge, and hedging reads as low confidence about who you are.

The pattern is documented in local search, where the cost of conflicting data is measurable. BrightLocal's Local Citations Trust Report found that 80% of consumers lose trust in a local business when they see incorrect or inconsistent contact details or business names online, and 22% had gone to the wrong location because of a bad address.

Human distrust and machine ambiguity come from the same source. If a person who reads two versions of your phone number can't tell which is real, a retrieval system that resolves your business against a knowledge graph has the same problem and picks whichever version appears more often, which includes sites you don't control. Standardize your legal name and trading name, plus your address and service list, on your own pages first, then push the same strings out to your profiles.

Schema should confirm visible facts

Use schema to describe what's already on the page, and stop there. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026 against roughly 4,000 control pages and found the independent effect on citation rate was near zero across three surfaces, at −4.6% for AI Overviews and +2.4% for AI Mode, with +2.2% for ChatGPT.

That result kills the most common WordPress reflex, which is to install a second schema plugin and switch on every markup type available. Two plugins outputting Organization markup with different logos or different founding dates gives you conflicting machine-readable claims about the same entity, which is worse than having none.

Keep the set small and accurate:

  • Organization on the homepage, with the same name, logo, and contact details your visible pages use

  • Article with a real author, publish date, and modified date on editorial content

  • Product or Service with prices and identifiers that match what a visitor sees, plus BreadcrumbList where your templates already show breadcrumbs

Validate in Google's Rich Results Test, then leave it alone. Schema markup is bookkeeping that keeps facts unambiguous.

Internal links establish context and importance

Priority pages need inbound links with descriptive anchors from related content. Internal linking tells retrieval systems which of your pages is the authoritative one on a topic, and orphaned pages carry no such signal at all.

The coverage effect is measurable. In a JetOctopus large-site case study, Googlebot crawl coverage rose from 40% to 70% after a revised internal linking strategy, a thirty-point shift from link work alone.

Read that alongside the crawler data from earlier in this audit. AI crawlers give you a limited number of fetches and waste a third of them on dead URLs, so where your surviving links point decides what gets read. Three deliberate contextual links from your best-performing articles into a service page will do more than a related-posts widget firing on every template. In WordPress, run a crawl with Screaming Frog and compare it against your sitemap export to surface orphans, then audit your anchor text for "click here" and bare URLs. Descriptive anchors do double duty because they name the entity and the topic in the same breath.

Useful content earns answer selection

Content quality decides selection once access and structure are sound. A page can pass every technical check and still be skipped because it answers nothing a person asked.

Freshness is the signal most WordPress sites ignore. ConvertMate's analysis of over 80 million citations found that content updated within 30 days receives 3.2x more AI citations, and Ahrefs separately found AI-cited content runs about 25.7% fresher than content in traditional search results.

Here's the inference that changes how you plan the work. If citations decay that fast, maintenance beats publishing volume. Twenty pages you revise on a schedule will out-earn eighty you abandon, because each revision resets the freshness clock on a page that already has links and index history. So flag thin and repetitive posts for consolidation. Merging four shallow posts into one maintained page gives you something worth updating, and it removes three competing chunks that were splitting your own retrieval signal.

Does each page provide a quotable answer?

Every page needs a sentence that resolves its question without the paragraph around it. Extraction happens at passage level, so the answer has to survive being lifted out.

Position matters as much as phrasing. The Wix and Evertune extraction-position study found 44.2% of AI Overview citations come from the first 30% of a page, with 31.1% from the middle. Length doesn't help you, since Ahrefs measured a 0.04 correlation between word count and citation position across 174,048 pages.

Front-load the answer, then keep the conditions. Where a topic genuinely depends on plan tier or jurisdiction, as well as site size, say the default first and qualify it in the next sentence. Nuance stripped out to make a sentence quotable produces a quote that's wrong, and a wrong quote about your business is worse than silence.

Can readers verify important claims?

Attach a name and a date, plus a source, to anything a person would act on. Verification signals are what separate a page worth citing from a page that reads like everyone else's.

Named authorship correlates strongly with selection. Hashmeta's analysis found 89.2% of frequently-cited pages carry a visible author byline, against 31.4% of rarely-cited pages.

Pair that with the Ahrefs schema result above and the instruction becomes specific. The byline has to be visible on the page, with a real bio and a link to a credential someone can check, because Person markup alone moved nothing. For anything touching money or health, as well as law or a purchase decision, add methodology and dates to your claims and name your own numbers as yours. WordPress makes this easy to neglect since the default author archive is thin and noindexed, so build real author pages and link them from every byline.

Score fixes by impact and effort

Build one worksheet and rank everything in it. Seven columns are enough to log the issue and affected URLs against business value and answer-readiness impact, with effort in hours recorded beside the owner and any dependency that has to clear first.

The ranking rule follows from what this audit found. Blockers go first because inaccessible content can't be cited. Then high-impact low-effort fixes, followed by structural template work and content revision.

Effort estimates are where WordPress teams get this wrong, and the direction of the error is consistent. A single theme change fixing heading structure across 400 posts is one ticket, while rewriting 400 posts is a quarter of someone's year. IndexCheckr's study of 16 million pages found 61.94% of pages were not indexed even though their domain was, which tells you most sites have a large pool of pages doing nothing. Score those for removal or consolidation. Deleting a page costs ten minutes and improves the average quality of everything you leave standing.

Turn scores into an implementation plan

Split the ranked list into an immediate workstream and a 30-day workstream, and put the rest in later. Immediate holds access blockers and anything that costs under an hour. The 30-day group takes template and schema work. Later holds content consolidation and the pages you'll rebuild.

Validate on a sample before you scale. Change one template and re-crawl the pages that use it to check the rendered HTML with JavaScript disabled and confirm your content is in the initial server response, since none of the major AI crawlers execute JavaScript.

I'd add one WordPress-specific check to every workstream: re-verify after plugin and theme updates. The audit findings you fix are configuration, and configuration reverts. A caching plugin update that changes how content is minified, or a theme update that restores default heading markup, can undo a week of structural work without anyone noticing for a month. Put a quarterly re-crawl of your priority template samples on the calendar and assign it to a named person, because a plan without an owner is a document.

Measure whether AI visibility improves

Measure at the prompt level, because that's where the change shows up first. Once the access and structure fixes are live, you need to know whether your brand is now appearing in answers to the questions your buyers actually ask, and no Search Console report tells you that.
