What is grounding in AI

Definition

Grounding in AI means tying a model's answer to a source it can check, such as a company document or a live web search, so it doesn't answer from memory alone.

Grounding AI output this way makes answers more accurate and lets you trace each claim to where it came from. When a chatbot cites a link, you're looking at grounding.

What grounding means for AI

Grounding means the model answers from information it receives at the moment you ask. Without it, the model can only draw on patterns it stored during training. A large language model (LLM) stops learning when its training ends, so it can't know yesterday's prices or your company's refund policy. A grounded system adds relevant text it retrieves to the prompt and tells the model to answer from it.

Why grounding reduces hallucinations

Grounding reduces hallucinations because the model reads the facts from a source in front of it. Without that source, it predicts text that looks factual. A hallucination is what happens when a model fills a gap in its knowledge with text that sounds right and isn't. If the retrieved source is wrong, the model repeats the error just as confidently, so check the source before you blame the model.

Grounding in real data

Real data means sources the system can check at answer time, such as web pages and product catalogs. Internal wikis also qualify. Out-of-date pages produce out-of-date answers, and two pages that disagree produce a muddled one. Teams that ground a model on their own documents spend most of the effort keeping those documents current.

Grounding vs RAG

Grounding is the goal, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is one method for reaching it. RAG searches a store of documents for the passages closest to the question and adds them to the prompt before the model writes. A model can also be grounded through a live web search or through text a user pastes into the chat. So every RAG system grounds its answers, but grounding doesn't always involve RAG.

How AI assistants use grounding

AI assistants ground their answers by running a web search when a question needs current or specific facts, then writing the answer from the pages they find. ChatGPT search and Perplexity both show those pages as cited links. The assistant decides for itself whether a request needs a search, so it looks up this week's news and rephrases an email directly.

Why grounding affects AI visibility

Grounding decides which brands appear in AI answers, because an assistant can only cite pages it has retrieved. Difficulty crawling a page or identifying what it offers reduces its chances of being picked. That's why generative engine optimization (GEO) focuses on clear pages that retrieval systems can find and quote. To check where you stand, ask an assistant about your category and note whose pages it cites.

Grounding in generative AI examples

An airline support bot uses grounding to answer baggage questions from the current policy page because it needs facts it wasn't trained on. When the airline raises a fee, the bot's answers change as soon as the page does, and nobody has to retrain the model. A legal research tool quotes the case text it retrieved, so a lawyer can check each citation.

Related terms

These terms come up alongside grounding in AI documentation. Each one covers a different part of how a model gets its facts. People mix them up.

Retrieval-augmented generation

RAG is a specific setup for grounding. It searches an indexed document store and passes the best passages to the model. It's one way to ground a model, and web search is another.

Fine-tuning

Fine-tuning changes the model itself by training it further on new examples. It teaches style and habits for a specific field well, but it's a poor way to add facts that change. Grounding leaves the model as it is and swaps the source material.

Context window

The context window is the amount of text a model can read in one request. After the question and the instructions are included, grounded material has to fit in the remaining space. A small window lets the system pass in fewer passages, which limits how well grounding AI answers can work.
