What is AEO

Definition

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping content so AI assistants and search features quote it as the direct answer to a question.

For a brand, AEO is the work that gets your page cited by ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews when a buyer asks about your category.

AEO defined for marketers

For marketers, AEO means earning a place inside the answer itself, where SEO earns a place on the results page. An answer engine is any system that replies with written text in place of a list of links, such as ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews. Success means your brand gets named or your page gets linked in that reply.

A software vendor wants a spot in the shortlist an assistant recommends, while a publisher wants the source link. That's why we start from the questions your buyers actually type and judge all AEO work against those.

How AEO differs from SEO

AEO differs from SEO in what it targets. SEO aims for a ranked link that a person clicks, while AEO aims for a sentence that an AI repeats.

Goal

Unit

Both depend on the same groundwork. Assistants pull from pages that crawlers can reach and index, so weak technical SEO holds back AEO too.

Why AI visibility matters now

AI visibility matters now because more and more questions get answered before anyone sees a results page. In February 2024, Gartner predicted that search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026. Alan Antin, Vice President Analyst at Gartner, said, "Generative AI (GenAI) solutions are becoming substitute answer engines."

At OpenAI's Dev Day 2025, CEO Sam Altman said 800 million people use ChatGPT every week. How hard this hits you depends on how your buyers research, and your referral traffic from AI assistants shows it.

How AEO works in practice

In practice, we find buyer questions and write answers an assistant can lift. We measure whether it does, then repeat the process.

How we find the questions

  1. 011Map buyer promptsWe write prompts the way your buyers phrase them.
  2. 022Read the answersWe run those prompts and record which brands get named and which pages get cited.
  3. 033Find the gapsWe compare you with competitors in each market you sell to.

Our free AI visibility audit does this check in about two hours, and it needs no access to your systems.

How we write for citation

Each section answers one question in its first sentence and backs it with a source. We create every kind of page in 135+ languages, with product pages and glossaries among them. Pages go live on your own domain through a DNS connection, and you approve each one in the dashboard before it's published.

How we measure results

We use weekly prompt sets to track mentions and share of voice in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. We also track sentiment and citations in those answers.

AEO vs GEO

AEO and GEO are overlapping names for the work of getting seen in AI answers. AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search, and it centers on direct answers to specific questions. GEO looks at how generative models describe and compare brands across longer responses.

The terms are used loosely, so a number only means something next to the prompts and assistants it was measured on. We treat GEO and AEO as one workflow with SEO, because the same page has to rank in Google and also read well when an assistant quotes it.

A short AEO example

A typical AEO fix rewrites a page so its first sentence answers the buyer's question outright. Say a tax software company's page on cross-border VAT registration opens with three paragraphs of background. After the rewrite, the opening line states who must register, and the supporting detail and official sources follow beneath it.

1StopVAT, in tax and fintech, saw 10x growth in ChatGPT visibility in 7 weeks.

Get cited by AI

You get cited by AI when your pages give short answers that assistants can check against a source.

Lead with the answerPut the direct reply in the first sentence of each section.
Phrase headings as questionsMatch the wording buyers use in prompts.
Cite primary sourcesLink figures to the original study or filing.
Keep names consistentUse the same brand and product names everywhere they appear online.
Allow AI crawlersMake sure your robots.txt doesn't block bots like OpenAI's GPTBot.
