Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of shaping a brand's content so AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews mention and cite the brand when they answer a buyer's question.
In marketing, GEO is how a brand gets into those written answers.
For a marketer, GEO is the work of getting your brand into the answer itself, where SEO aims for a rank on a results page. An AI assistant reads sources and writes one reply that names a handful of brands, and if yours isn't in it, the buyer never reaches your site. We run GEO as a separate visibility channel, with its own prompts and its own reports, next to search.
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues at Princeton, which was accepted to the 2024 Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) conference. A "generative engine" is any system that writes an answer from the sources it retrieves. In local marketing, "geo" can still mean geographic targeting.
AI visibility matters because buyers now get their answers without clicking. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said at DevDay in October 2025 that more than 800 million people use ChatGPT every week. Pew Research Center found that Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. The summary is where a buyer forms a view of your brand.
GEO works as a loop that we repeat every week:
SEO earns a ranked link that a person clicks, while GEO earns a mention or citation inside an answer that a machine writes.

GEO builds on SEO work because a page must be readable by a crawler to rank or get cited.
1StopVAT, in tax and fintech, saw 10x growth in ChatGPT visibility in 7 weeks. Here, visibility means how often ChatGPT names the brand across a fixed set of buyer prompts. A result like this only means something with its baseline, its time window and the assistant measured, because a gain in ChatGPT doesn't carry over to other engines automatically.
We measure GEO by running the same set of buyer prompts on a schedule and counting how the answers treat your brand. Then we connect that visibility to the traffic you already track.
Our tracking uses weekly prompt sets to measure mentions and share of voice in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, where most AI search traffic happens. We also track sentiment and citations in those answers. Share of voice is your brand's mentions divided by all brand mentions in your category's answers. We keep the prompt set fixed, because if the prompts change, you can't tell whether the answers moved or only the test did.
Mentions count only when they reach your funnel. With access to Google Analytics 4 and your other Google measurement tools, we tie AI visibility to the traffic you already measure. In Analytics 4, that starts with referral sessions from assistant domains such as chatgpt.com.
AI engines reward content they can quote and check easily. Aggarwal's team tested nine methods across 10,000 queries and found that GEO can raise a source's visibility by up to 40%. The methods that helped most added quotations and statistics from named sources, while keyword stuffing didn't help.
