What is an answer engine

Definition

An answer engine is a search tool that replies to a question with one written answer instead of a list of links.

It reads web sources and turns the relevant facts into a plain reply with citations. ChatGPT and Perplexity are the best-known examples. Ask what are answer engines, and the short reply is that they do the reading for you.

Answer engine defined for marketers

For a marketer, an answer engine is a channel where your brand shows up as a sentence inside an AI reply. The engine picks which brands it names, and readers get the answer without a visit to your site. Check that these engines describe your company accurately, because they repeat what they find.

How it differs from search

A search engine returns a ranked list of pages. An answer engine returns one composed answer. With classic Google results, you compare the links yourself and click one. An answer engine does the comparing for you, and it keeps the context of the conversation so you can ask follow-up questions. The line between the two has blurred since Google started showing AI Overviews above its regular results.

Why AI visibility matters

AI visibility matters because a buyer who gets a full answer seldom needs to click any further. If that answer names a competitor and skips you, you've lost the buyer before they ever saw your site. A page can rank first in Google and still go uncited by ChatGPT, so track both.

How answer engines work

Answer engines pair a large language model (LLM) with a retrieval step that fetches sources. The system turns your question into search queries and pulls matching pages. The model then writes an answer from those passages and cites them. Retrieval differs between engines. Perplexity searches the live web for most queries, while a chat model without browsing answers from its training data alone. Pages that put a direct answer under a clear heading are the easiest to quote.

Answer engine example

Perplexity is a typical answer engine. Type "best CRM for a 10-person sales team" and it returns a short comparison of tools, with numbered citations to the review sites and vendor pages it used. Only the vendors named in that reply get the attention.

What is AEO

Answer engine optimization (AEO) means shaping your content so answer engines find it and quote it. In practice, you put a direct answer in the first sentence of each section and write headings that match real questions. You also keep your facts the same on your own site and on the third-party pages the engines read. AEO builds on search engine optimization (SEO), since most answer engines still pull from indexed web pages.

Related terms

Four terms come up alongside answer engine, and each one names a different part of AI search. They overlap in everyday use. Knowing where they differ makes planning conversations clearer.

Generative engine optimization (GEO)

GEO is optimization aimed at generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini. It overlaps heavily with AEO. People who separate the two use GEO for brand mentions inside generated text and AEO for direct answers to specific questions.

AI Overviews

AI Overviews are Google's AI-written summaries at the top of a results page. They're an answer engine built into a search engine. A standalone chatbot has no results page, but AI Overviews still sit above the classic list of links.

Large language model (LLM)

An LLM is the model that writes the text inside an answer engine. On its own, it predicts language from its training data. An answer engine adds retrieval and citations on top.

Zero-click search

A zero-click search is a query that ends without a click to any website. Answer engines push that share up because the reply settles the question. The term describes what users do, while answer engine names the tool. If you're still working out what are answer engines doing to your traffic, ask 3 of them about your brand and note who gets cited.

Getting cited by answer engines is the subject of our generative engine optimization guide and of the glossary entry on AEO.
