Gemini users disclosed by Google

Google's latest disclosure puts the Gemini app above 1 billion monthly active users as of August 11, 2026. The company releases this number on earnings calls and at keynotes, and each release counts monthly users of the standalone app. Here is every figure Google has given since late 2025:

The app added 350 million monthly users in the 10 months between the Q3 2025 call and the August 2026 post. On the July call, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai also said daily active users had tripled in a year. That matters as much as the headline because it shows that people return more often as well as sign up. Google's August post calls the app "the fastest-growing product in Google's history."

TechCrunch noted that the billion "refers specifically to the Gemini app, and does not include AI users from other channels," so AI Mode and AI Overviews sit outside it. Independent panels also count lower. Sensor Tower estimated Gemini at 662 million monthly users in May 2026, the same month Google announced 900 million. The difference reflects a gap in method without contradicting Google's number.

Gemini market share rank

Gemini ranks second behind ChatGPT on every public consumer share measure, and third in enterprise API spend. Its rank holds steady while its share moves a lot, from 10.91% to 27.7% depending on what a tracker counts.

Each tracker counts something different, and that's why the shares spread so far. One heavy user contributes many sessions to Similarweb's visit count. Sensor Tower models unique people from a panel that covers apps and the web. StatCounter counts page views from chatbot links on sites that use its tracker, so it measures which assistant sends people onward to other sites.

Read the enterprise figure with its source in mind. Menlo Ventures surveyed 495 U.S. enterprise decision-makers and is an Anthropic investor, which the report discloses.

Gemini vs ChatGPT share

The gap between ChatGPT and Gemini halved over the 12 months to August 2026, though ChatGPT still holds about twice Gemini's share of AI website traffic. Similarweb's monthly data shows how fast it narrowed:

Sensor Tower's user counts point the same way. ChatGPT held 65.3% of assistant users in December 2024. By the end of May 2026 it was down to 46.4%, the first time it had dropped below half.

Line chart: ChatGPT's share of generative AI web traffic fell from 73.3% in August 2025 to 64.6% in January 2026, 55.5% in August 2026 and 56.4% in September 2026, while Gemini rose from 12.9% to 22%, 25.6% and 25.0%.

Gemini's web share stood at 27.8% in Similarweb's earlier update and had slipped to 25.0% by September 2026, while ChatGPT gained back about 3 points. Headline user counts also flatter Gemini. OpenAI said ChatGPT reached 1 billion weekly users in August 2026, while Google's billion is monthly. A weekly count is a stricter test, so ChatGPT's billion means people use it more often.

ChatGPT leads on every consumer measure. Gemini is the only assistant close enough to cut that lead by double digits. Use Similarweb's monthly series if you need the trend, and Sensor Tower if you need reach in people.

Leading assistants by share

ChatGPT and Gemini hold the top two places on every consumer share measure, and the order below them changes with the metric. Claude is third by web visits and by users. Perplexity is third by referral clicks.

Share of web visits and app users

Similarweb's August 2026 update shows Claude rising to 9.3%, while every smaller assistant lost ground compared with the same month a year earlier.

Claude grew fastest in proportion and nearly quintupled its share. Gemini's absolute gain of 12.7 points was still the largest. Sensor Tower's user-based count gives a similar order, with Claude on 10.3% in May 2026. Grok and Perplexity each had under 5% of users in that count, as did DeepSeek and Meta AI.

Donut chart: in August 2026 ChatGPT held 55.5% of generative AI web visits, Gemini 25.6%, Claude 9.3%, DeepSeek 3.4%, Grok 2.4%, Copilot 1.6% and Perplexity 0.9%.

Share of referral clicks

StatCounter's September 2026 count of clicks from chatbots to other websites puts Perplexity third at 5.85%, ahead of Copilot at 1.79% and Claude at 0.95%. That's a big jump from Perplexity's 0.9% of web visits. That referral share fits Perplexity's source-link-based answers. ChatGPT sends 80.48% of these clicks and Gemini 10.91%. Keep the scale in mind, though. Chatbots sent just 0.4% of referral traffic to websites that month, against 91% from search engines.

Gemini growth from AI Overviews

Google doesn't publish how much of Gemini's growth comes from AI Overviews, and no public tracker isolates it. AI Overviews have a separate user count. They run on Gemini models and reach far more people than the Gemini app does. Google's own figures show how that reach has grown:

At I/O 2026 Pichai said, "AI Overviews now has over 2.5 billion monthly active users." Google's query lift figure is its closest measure of growth. On the Q2 2025 call Pichai said, "We know how popular AI overviews are because they are now driving over 10% more queries globally for the types of queries that show them, and this growth continues to increase over time." That lift measures growth in Search queries, which is a separate measure from Gemini app sign-ups.

Area chart: Google reported over 1.5 billion AI Overviews monthly users in May 2025, 2 billion in July 2025 and over 2.5 billion in May 2026.
AI Overviews reach far more people than the Gemini app, and the count grew by a billion users in a year. Source: Google I/O and Alphabet earnings call, 2025 to 2026.

The path from AI Overviews runs through Search. On January 27, 2026, Google made Gemini 3 the default model for AI Overviews worldwide. On mobile, tapping "Show more" now opens an AI Mode conversation, which keeps the user on google.com.

First, an AI Overviews user is anyone who saw one, and in Pew's March 2025 browsing panel only 18% of Google searches produced an AI summary. Second, Google's user counts overlap, so never add AI Overviews users to Gemini app users.

AI Mode effect on Gemini

AI Mode increases the number of people who get Gemini answers, but it doesn't change the Gemini app's market share. Both products use the same model. At I/O 2026, Google made Gemini 3.5 Flash the default in both the Gemini app and AI Mode. The traffic doesn't carry over, though, because AI Mode lives on google.com. A tracker that counts visits to chatbot domains such as gemini.google.com has no line for it.

Alphabet reported 75 million daily users for AI Mode in Q3 2025. By I/O in May 2026 it had passed 1 billion monthly users. A growth-rate calculation requires the same unit for both figures. Google hasn't given a daily AI Mode count since.

For publishers, the bigger effect is clicks. Semrush measured 92-94% zero-click sessions in AI Mode across about 69 million U.S. desktop sessions in mid-2025, against about 34% for classic searches without an AI Overview. Gemini's answers inside AI Mode reach a large audience but send few visitors to other sites. The share tables above miss that audience, so they understate how far Gemini's models actually reach.

B2B brands in Gemini

Gemini sent 10.6% of B2B AI referrals in March and April 2026, up from 2.4% in May to August 2025, according to Goodie's panel of brand websites. In its first wave, Goodie measured 2,802,519 AI referral sessions across 41 brand sites. The second wave shows a more dispersed field.

Gemini's share quadrupled, though it still trails Claude among B2B visitors. That pattern matches enterprise buying. Deedy Das, a partner at Menlo Ventures, said of OpenAI: "Now that they've fallen to 27%, Google is nipping at their heels with 21%."

Goodie averages each brand's share, so a small site counts as much as a large one when you benchmark your own site against these numbers. Referral data also misses Gemini answers inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, because those clicks arrive from google.com and analytics tools file them as search traffic.

What it means for SEO

Gemini's reach inside Google Search makes a citation in AI Overviews worth more than the app's 25.6% web share suggests. The click cost is real. Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Seer Interactive then reported that organic click-through on AI Overview queries rebounded 85% in early 2026, over the first two months of the year.

Measure Gemini's reach separately on each surface.

  1. 011List the queries that matter to your revenue and record which ones show an AI Overview.
  2. 022Check whether your pages are cited in those overviews and in the AI Mode follow-ups.
  3. 033Run the same buyer questions in the Gemini app, because its answers can differ from those in Search.
  4. 044Filter gemini.google.com referrals in your analytics so you can track app traffic apart from search.
  5. 055Repeat each check over several weeks to account for changes in AI answers from one run to the next.

Methodology

We took each figure from the organization that produced it wherever possible, with Google figures drawn from Alphabet investor relations and the Google blog. We also used Pew Research Center and StatCounter directly. Similarweb and Sensor Tower publish their full tables to clients only. For those, we link the press report that quotes the figure and name the original tracker in the text.

Every figure keeps its original unit and period, with decimal places unchanged. We didn't round, merge or estimate any number. Gap figures are simple subtractions from the cited shares. We last checked all figures in October 2026.

How to use these figures

Choose the measure that fits your question and state its unit. Cite the source and month alongside it. Gemini market share can mean 25.6% of visits or 27.7% of users. Measured by referral clicks, its share is 10.91%. Quote one of these without its unit and readers will compare it with the wrong number. If you're writing about audience reach, use Sensor Tower or Google's own user counts. If you're writing about traffic to your site, use StatCounter or your own analytics. Confirm the latest month before you publish because every Similarweb update moves the share by a point or more.
