SearchGPT is OpenAI's AI search tool.
It answers questions in plain language and cites the web pages it used. OpenAI announced the prototype on July 25, 2024 and later built it into ChatGPT. ChatGPT search is SearchGPT under its current name.
For a marketer, SearchGPT is a search channel where a written answer takes the place of a list of links. A user asks a question. ChatGPT writes a reply with sources named in the text and more links listed in a sidebar. Your page gets attention when the reply cites it. Since OpenAI opened search to all logged-in users on December 16, 2024, anyone with a ChatGPT account can see those citations.
SearchGPT combines a language model with live web search. ChatGPT searches the web when a question needs current facts, or when the user taps the search icon. It reads the pages it finds and writes one answer from them. CNBC reported that the model is a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o that draws partly on third-party search providers and news partners. Follow-up questions keep the earlier context, so users narrow their search the way they would in a conversation.
SearchGPT gives one written answer, while traditional search gives you a ranked list of pages to open and compare. In Google, you click through and put the answer together yourself. In ChatGPT, the model does that work and shows its sources as citations. As a result, fewer clicks reach any one site, but each cited site gets named inside the answer. A page can rank well in Google and still never appear in ChatGPT, so track both.
AI search visibility matters because a buyer who gets the answer in ChatGPT never sees the results page you rank on. If the reply names a competitor and leaves you out, you've lost that comparison before anyone visits your site. Ask the questions your customers ask and write down which brands and pages show up.
SearchGPT can only choose from pages its crawler can reach, and from those it cites the ones that answer the question most directly. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI hasn't published how it ranks pages beyond that. The pages that get quoted state their answer early and keep their facts current. SearchGPT favors recent articles for news questions and pages that lay out the steps in order for how-to questions.
To get cited by SearchGPT, make sure its crawler can reach your pages. Then write them so a model can pull a correct answer straight from the text.
Open your robots.txt file and check that OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked. GPTBot is a separate setting. OpenAI treats training and search as independent, so you can block one and allow the other. Put your main text in plain HTML, because a crawler that doesn't run scripts can't quote what scripts load.
Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading. Write headings that match the questions people actually type. And when facts change, update the page, because an outdated figure gives the model a reason to cite someone else.
Say a user asks, "What should I check before renewing a commercial lease?" SearchGPT replies with a short checklist covering rent review terms and break clauses. A named source is linked next to each point, and a Sources panel lists more pages. The guide that opens with a plain checklist is the one that gets quoted. To see how your own pages do, run five of your customers' real questions through SearchGPT and note which sources it cites.
