What is an AI assistant

Definition

An AI assistant is software that answers requests written in everyday language and completes tasks for you.

It runs on a large language model (LLM), which reads your prompt and writes the reply. If you're asking what is an AI assistant, you've probably used one already. ChatGPT is one, and so is Google Gemini.

AI assistant defined for marketers

For a marketer, an AI assistant is a second place where buyers find brands, next to the search results page. People ask it to recommend a supplier, and it replies with a few names and some source links. The pages it cites get the visit that a high ranking used to earn.

What an AI assistant does

An AI assistant answers questions and carries out tasks you describe in plain words, such as drafting copy or summarizing a long report. ChatGPT counts as an AI assistant because it keeps a conversation going over many turns and can call tools such as web search. Tool access varies by product and plan, so check whether web search was on before you trust a date it gives you.

How AI assistants work

An AI assistant predicts the likeliest next words in reply to a prompt, based on patterns its model learned in training. That training stops at a cutoff date. So most assistants now run a web search first and write the answer from the pages it returns. This method is called retrieval.

AI assistant vs chatbot

A chatbot follows a script, while an AI assistant writes its own answers. The classic support chatbot matches your words to prepared replies and passes you to a human when it runs out of them. An assistant writes a new reply each time and can handle questions nobody planned for.

AI assistant vs AI agent

An AI assistant handles one request at a time, and an AI agent works toward a goal across many steps with little supervision. Ask an assistant for flights and it lists them. An agent books the seat and adds it to your calendar before it reports back. Check what a tool is allowed to do on its own before you give it access to your accounts.

How assistants cite sources

An assistant cites the pages it retrieved and used to write the answer. The model can't recall URLs reliably, so the links come from the live search step. That step has two stages.

Which pages get retrieved

The assistant turns your question into one or more search queries and sends them to an index such as Bing or Google. Only pages that rank for those queries make it into the pool of candidates. That's why classic search rankings still matter for AI visibility. If crawlers are blocked from a page, the assistant never reads it, however good it is.

Which pages get quoted

From that pool, the model picks the passages that answer the question most directly and links each claim to its source. A fact stated plainly in one or two sentences is easier to pull out than one buried in the middle of a paragraph. Vendors don't publish their full method, and results differ from one assistant to the next. Test your own queries in each one.

Getting cited by AI assistants

To get cited, your pages must be easy for the search step to find and easy for the model to quote. Check that your robots.txt file doesn't block crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or Googlebot. Put the direct answer to each question in the first lines of its section. Then type your buyers' prompts into each assistant every month and record which sources appear.

Related terms

Four terms sit close to the AI assistant definition. Each one overlaps with it but differs in one way.

Large language model (LLM)the model that predicts text. An assistant is the product built on top of it.
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)a method that fetches documents before the model writes its answer. It's one step inside an assistant.
Generative engine optimization (GEO)work that earns your brand mentions in AI answers. It targets assistants, while search engine optimization targets results pages.
Answer engine optimization (AEO)writing content that a system can quote as a direct answer. It also covers featured snippets and voice search.

If you looked up what is an AI assistant for work, try one test next. Type a question your buyers ask into ChatGPT and Gemini, then note which sources each one cites. Those links show you which pages the assistants already trust in your field.
