What was Google SGE

Definition

Google SGE (Search Generative Experience) was Google's test of AI-written answers at the top of its search results.

It opened as an opt-in experiment in Search Labs in May 2023. A year later, Google renamed it AI Overviews and switched it on for every US searcher. The name is gone, but the feature it tested now appears on a large share of Google searches.

SGE defined

SGE was a layer of generative AI that sat above Google's normal results and wrote a summary of the answer. Elizabeth Reid, Vice President and GM of Search at Google, announced it on May 10, 2023 and described it this way: "You'll see an AI-powered snapshot of key information to consider, with links to dig deeper." It was never a finished product. You had to sign up for it, and at launch only US users searching in English could try it.

How SGE worked in practice

When a query suited it, SGE generated a snapshot box above the organic links. The box drew text from several pages and showed the source sites next to the summary. Under it, suggested follow-up questions opened a conversational mode, so your next search kept the context of the last one. Not every query got a snapshot. Google kept it off certain query types, and by November 2023 the beta had reached over 120 countries and territories.

Why SGE mattered for visibility

SGE mattered because the first answer a searcher saw was no longer a ranked link. It was a generated summary. A page in position one sat below a box that had already answered the question. Authoritas, an SEO software company, studied 1,000 commercial search terms in January 2024 and warned of "potentially dramatic falls in organic visibility for many sites." Visibility came to mean both ranking in the links and being cited as a source in the summary.

How AI Overviews replaced SGE

AI Overviews are SGE after it left the lab. Google began showing them to everyone in the US in May 2024, and nobody had to opt in. AI Overviews reach more searchers than SGE did. SGE was an experiment whose layout Google kept changing, while AI Overviews appear by default and have spread well beyond the US. The conversational side of SGE took a separate path and became AI Mode in 2025.

SGE effects on traffic

SGE itself had little measurable effect on traffic, because few people opted in. Its successor has had a much larger one. In a Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults, users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. If you track organic traffic, split your queries into those that show an AI Overview and those that don't. A site-wide average hides the drop.

Get cited in AI search

You get cited by being eligible for Google's normal results and by writing passages a model can quote. A page has to be indexed and able to show a snippet before an AI summary can use it. After that, the structure of the page does most of the work. Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading, and keep claims specific and sourced. Then check which of your target queries trigger an AI Overview and whether your pages are among its sources.

Related terms worth knowing

Google SGE belongs to a small group of terms for features or practices that people still mix up.

AI Overviews

AI Overviews are the live version of SGE's snapshot. They show by default in Google Search and link to their sources. SGE was the trial, and this is the product that came out of it.

AI Mode

AI Mode is Google's full conversational search tab. It grew out of SGE's follow-up questions. An AI Overview sits on top of the normal results, while AI Mode replaces those results with a chat.

Generative engine optimization (GEO)

GEO is the practice of getting content cited by AI assistants and AI search features. Where SGE was a feature, GEO is the work site owners do to show up in features like it.

Answer engine optimization (AEO)

AEO focuses on giving direct answers that engines can pull out as they are. It overlaps with GEO but started earlier, with featured snippets and voice search, before Google SGE existed.

SGE's successor is covered in the entry on AI Overviews; the model mechanics are in how LLMs work.
