Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant connect to outside tools and data through one shared interface.
Anthropic open-sourced MCP in November 2024. It gives assistants such as ChatGPT or Claude a route to live data that wasn't in their training, and any app or data source can use it.
For AI visibility, MCP is a channel that lets an assistant pull current, structured data straight from a source, so it doesn't have to rely only on what it learned in training. With MCP, the model can ask a connected server for fresh facts at the moment a user asks a question.
A brand can enter an AI answer through the open web the model has read or through the systems it can query directly. Which servers an assistant can reach depends on the platform and on what the user has connected.
MCP is a client-server exchange. The AI app asks for something, and a server answers in a fixed format.
The messages use JSON-RPC 2.0 messaging, a lightweight format for calling functions on another system.
An MCP server is a program that sits in front of a data source or service and makes it available to AI clients in the format the protocol defines.
Companies usually build a server on top of an API or database they already run. They decide which data and actions an assistant may reach, wrap that scope into tools and resources, and control who can connect. Access control matters: a 2026 Practical DevSecOps report found that only 8.5% of servers use OAuth.
The main difference is how the connection gets built. Each traditional API needs its own integration code, while MCP lets one client talk to any server.
| Attribute | Traditional API | MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Developers writing code | AI models choosing at runtime |
| Integration | Custom code per service | One protocol for all servers |
| Discovery | Read the docs | Server lists capabilities on connect |

In agentic AI, MCP lets an agent work across more than one system in a single task. For example, an agent can read a support ticket through one server, check the order through another and then draft a reply.
David Soria Parra, MCP's lead core maintainer, reported over 97 million monthly SDK downloads and 10,000 active servers. He also reported first-class client support across major AI platforms. In December 2025, the protocol moved to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, so no single vendor controls it.
MCP affects AI citations because an assistant that queries a source live can quote what that source returns, even when older pages it crawled say something different. Without such a server, the assistant falls back on web content that may be out of date or written by a competitor.
Most consumer chats still run without custom servers, so web citations carry most of the weight today. That's why our tracking focuses on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, where we measure citations and share of voice with weekly prompt sets.
Brand discovery through MCP happens when a user's assistant connects to a server that holds brand or category data and brings that data into the conversation. Brands can use the protocol to supply their own data or to bring their marketing data into an assistant.
The Snoika MCP server does the second job for our clients. It brings their visibility data and content maps into the assistants their teams already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, so they can ask about their AI visibility where they work. Access is arranged for clients when you book a call with our team.
