LLM visibility is how often, and how favorably, large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT name a brand when people ask questions in its category.
It shows whether the AI answer a buyer reads includes the brand and links to the brand's own pages.
LLM visibility is the place a brand holds inside answers written by AI assistants. Some answers mention a brand in passing, while others provide a linked citation. A model may put you first in a shortlist or list you fifth with outdated facts, and a buyer reads those differently. The result also changes between assistants and markets, so we check it per model and per country.
AI citation matters because more buyers now stop reading at the answer. OpenAI reported 900 million weekly users for ChatGPT in February 2026. On Google's Q2 2025 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews had reached 2 billion monthly users.
A Pew Research Center study of March 2025 searches found that people clicked a result link in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when none did. If the summary names a competitor and leaves you out, that buyer never reaches your site.
LLMs find brands through what they learned in training and what they pull from the web when the question is asked. Training data shapes the model's default view of a category, so brands that come up often in independent reviews and press coverage appear first. Retrieval works more like search: the assistant runs a live query and cites the pages that answer the prompt clearly, and Pew found that 88% of AI summaries cited three or more sources. A model can't retrieve a page that blocks AI crawlers.
You measure LLM visibility by asking AI assistants the same buyer prompts on a fixed schedule and recording what they say. A single check can mislead because answers vary between sessions and shift when a model is updated, so we compare results across weeks.
Track the questions your buyers actually type, in their own words, for each market you sell in. Our free AI visibility audit builds tailored buyer prompts without access to any client system and checks the answers for competitors and gaps in about two hours.
We track four signals weekly in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, where most AI search traffic happens.
To improve LLM visibility, we publish pages that answer buyer prompts directly and work on mentions in sources that models already trust.
The pages we create go live on your own domain through a DNS connection, and you approve each one in the dashboard before it's published. 1StopVAT, in tax and fintech, saw 10x growth in ChatGPT visibility in 7 weeks.
LLM visibility differs from SEO rankings in what the reader sees. A rank measures your position for a keyword, while visibility captures whether you're in the answer at all and what the model says about you.
| Attribute | Traditional SEO | LLM visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Unit tracked | Keyword | Buyer prompt |
| Output | Ranked list of links | One written answer |
| Success signal | Position and clicks | Mention and citation |

AI Overviews draw on the same Google index that ranks your pages, so SEO work carries over.
llms.txt is a plain Markdown file at the root of a website that points language models to its most useful pages. Jeremy Howard, co-founder of Answer.AI, proposed the file on September 3, 2024, as a community convention that no standards body has ratified. Google Search Advocate John Mueller compared it to the old keywords meta tag. We treat llms.txt as cheap housekeeping and spend the effort on the pages it lists, since those are what models quote.
