Prompt tracking is the practice of running the same buyer questions through AI assistants on a fixed schedule and recording whether each answer names or cites your brand.
It shows what ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews tell your buyers, which a rankings report can't.
Prompt tracking repeats the same set of prompts with the same AI assistants every week so that we can log and score every response. A prompt is the full question a person types into an assistant, for example "best VAT compliance software for a US seller in the EU." Prompts are longer than keywords and say more about the buyer.
In marketing, prompt tracking means watching what the assistants say about you. Engineers use the term to mean logging the prompts inside their own app's model calls.
A large share of buying research now starts inside AI assistants, and a brand they don't name loses those buyers before anyone clicks. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said at Dev Day in October 2025 that ChatGPT had reached 800 million weekly users. On Alphabet's Q2 2025 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews had 2 billion monthly users. And when an overview appeared, a Pew Research study reported by Digital Watch Observatory found that users clicked a result link in just 8% of visits.
Prompt tracking sends a fixed set of prompts to each assistant and saves the full answer, which it scores for your brand and your competitors. The same prompt can get a different answer each time because the models are probabilistic and their source results change. We run weekly prompt sets in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, where most AI search traffic happens, and compare each week with the one before. The trend across several weeks shows whether a one-week spike is noise.
Your prompt set determines which questions you test, the markets where you run them and the competitors you score against. A good set mixes broad category questions with direct comparisons against a rival, the way real buyers ask. Location and language change the answers too, so a brand that sells in Germany needs German prompts run as a German user. The set should also include prompts where you're invisible today, because those show you the gaps.
To set up prompt tracking, we build a prompt list, record a baseline and connect the results to your analytics.
We track 4 metrics for each prompt and each assistant.
A mention counts each answer that names your brand. It's the simplest sign of whether an assistant knows you exist at all, and it can move quickly. 1StopVAT, in tax and fintech, saw 10x growth in ChatGPT visibility in 7 weeks.
Share of voice is your mentions as a percentage of all brand mentions in the category. It tells you whether you're gaining ground on competitors or just moving with the market.
Sentiment records whether the answer describes you favorably, neutrally or with a warning attached. A mention that says you're "expensive and slow to support" hurts you.
A citation is a link the assistant gives as its source. Citations show you which of your pages the models trust, and which competitor pages they trust more than yours.
Rank tracking reports where a URL sits on a results page for a keyword, while prompt tracking reports whether an AI answer names your brand at all.
| Attribute | Rank tracking | Prompt tracking |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Short keyword | Full buyer question |
| Output | Position 1 to 100 | Mention, citation, sentiment |
| Stability | Mostly steady | Varies between runs |
| Competitor view | Who ranks above you | Who gets recommended instead |
Input

Stability
Competitor view
Both are worth keeping, because a page can rank first on Google and still be missing from the AI answer above it.
