Gemini vs ChatGPT: how each assistant picks the sources it cites

Your brand's existing online presence determines which platform matters more because Gemini and ChatGPT pick their sources in different ways. Gemini grounds its answers in Google Search and favors brand-owned websites, which helps a brand with a strong, well-structured site. ChatGPT runs its own retrieval and leans on third-party consensus such as directories and forums, which helps a brand that other sites talk about. Most B2B brands need to track both, and they should track them separately.

Search visibility compared

The two assistants now reach audiences of about the same size, but they show those audiences different sources. At Alphabet's July 2026 earnings call, Google reported 950 million monthly Gemini users. Business Insider put ChatGPT at around 1 billion monthly users, based on Sensor Tower data. Because the audiences are close in size, the gap that matters is in sourcing. The table below lays out that gap. Each row is explained and cited in the sections that follow.

Before you act on any row, check the date of the study behind it. Citation behavior on both platforms has changed several times since 2024, and a figure that's six months old describes a different system.

How each AI finds sources

Gemini decides what to cite by running Google searches and attaching the results to parts of its answer. ChatGPT decides by pulling results from a mix of outside search providers and its own index, and it pays more attention to whichever sources come first.

How Gemini retrieves and cites

Google's developer documentation describes the process plainly: "Grounding with Google Search connects the Gemini model to real-time web content and works with all available languages." When grounding runs, the API returns the search queries Gemini generated and the pages it used, with each page mapped to the text segments it supports. Developers can also set when grounding kicks in. Google's 2024 launch post explains that each prompt gets a prediction score between 0 and 1, with a default threshold of 0.3 for triggering a search.

Gemini also relies more on what it already knows. A 2026 arXiv paper on citation drivers found that the model behind Gemini named tracked vendors for 60–96% of questions without any search, while the model behind ChatGPT did so for 2–16%. If Gemini's training data never linked your brand to your category, a grounded search alone is insufficient to fix that.

How ChatGPT retrieves and cites

OpenAI launched ChatGPT search on October 31, 2024. CNBC reported that it ran on a fine-tuned GPT-4o and was fueled by third-party search providers along with content from news partners. Court documents from the Google antitrust case showed that OpenAI asked for access to Google's search API in 2024 and was turned down. The same filings mention "significant quality issues" with non-Google search partners.

As a result, ChatGPT's sources rarely match Google's. A comparison of 1,000 queries by Chen and colleagues found 0.0% median domain overlap between GPT-4o and Google's top 10, against 8.5% for Gemini 2.5 Flash. ChatGPT also has a position bias that Gemini lacks. In the arXiv study above, ChatGPT cited a given source in 60% of answers when it appeared first and 43% when it appeared last. Gemini stayed between 57% and 59% wherever the source sat.

Which brands each model cites

Gemini favors the brand's own website, while ChatGPT favors what third parties say about the brand. Profound analyzed 6.8 million citations and found that Gemini drew 52.15% of its citations from brand-owned sites. ChatGPT drew 48.73% from third-party directories. A polished product page will do more for you in Gemini. A strong G2 profile or an active community thread will do more in ChatGPT.

The two models also treat mentions differently. Orbit Media's study of 13,184 citations documented how ChatGPT usually links the brand when it names one. Gemini and Claude name brands freely without giving a source. That means your brand can show up in a Gemini answer and still send you no traffic you can see.

Market leaders differ from one platform to the next as well. The EMGI Group SaaS citation report found that in customer relationship management (CRM) software, HubSpot leads on ChatGPT while Zoho CRM leads on Google. In analytics, Mixpanel leads on ChatGPT and Amplitude leads on Google. Check your own category on both platforms, because leading on one tells you nothing about the other.

Citation frequency by platform

ChatGPT now shows about twice as many citations per answer as Gemini, though that number moves quickly. SolCrys tracked 5 engines over buyer-comparison prompts and recorded a sharp drop in ChatGPT citations between July and September 2026.

Gemini's figures barely moved, while ChatGPT's changed overnight. Only a few months before that drop, an Ahrefs snapshot reported by gptmelo showed Reddit at 29.4% as ChatGPT's top-cited domain. If you chased Reddit threads in the spring, the payoff in ChatGPT had disappeared by autumn. Keep in mind that Gemini cites only about 4 or 5 sources per answer, which leaves fewer slots and more competition for each one.

Visibility gaps B2B brands face

Most B2B brands don't appear in AI answers at all, even though their buyers now start research there. G2 surveyed 1,076 software buyers in March 2026 and found that 51% start vendor research in an AI chatbot, up from 29% in April 2025. In the same period, the 2X AI Visibility Index found that 96% of B2B brands score zero on early-stage discovery queries.

Ranking in Google doesn't close the gap. Walker Sands benchmarked 828 enterprise companies and found a median citation rate of 3% in Google AI Overviews. The top quartile only reached 4.5%. Vendor sites as a group do get cited, but in the SolCrys data no single vendor's own site earned more than 2.4% of citations.

Gated whitepapers create a mechanical barrier that hides the best material from crawlers. Product pages describe features without answering the buyer's actual question. A brand that only shows up on its own domain looks thin to ChatGPT, which relies on third-party consensus. Check each of these before you spend money on new content.

Get cited by Gemini

You get cited by Gemini by being easy for Google to find and easy to quote once found. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found that branded web mentions had a 0.664 correlation with visibility in AI Overviews, while backlinks scored 0.218. That study covered AI Overviews alone, which draws on the same Google index as the Gemini app.

  1. Confirm your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console and rank for the questions your buyers ask.
  2. Open each section of a page with a direct answer, since Gemini attaches each claim to a specific text segment.
  3. Put product specs and prices on your own domain in plain HTML, because Gemini favors brand-owned sources. Publish comparisons there in the same format.
  4. Earn brand mentions on industry sites so the model connects your name to your category.
  5. Refresh dates and figures on a set schedule.

To find out whether Gemini cites your brand, run a fixed set of buyer prompts in the Gemini app every month and log two things separately: whether it names your brand and whether it links to you. You need both columns because Gemini names brands without linking to them. If your team can use the API, the grounding chunks list the exact URLs Gemini relied on, which tells you which of your pages are doing the work.

Get cited by ChatGPT

You get cited by ChatGPT by letting its search crawler in and building a presence on the third-party sites it trusts. OpenAI's crawler documentation is direct about the first step: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links." OAI-SearchBot is separate from GPTBot, the crawler OpenAI uses for training, so you can block training and still appear in search.

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your content delivery network (CDN) firewall.
  2. Get listed and reviewed on the directories and comparison sites that rank for your category.
  3. Pitch data and expert commentary to trade press, since ChatGPT reads consensus across sources.
  4. Make sure your main content renders in server HTML.
  5. Track referrals in analytics through the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag that ChatGPT adds to outbound links.

Remember that ChatGPT can mention you without citing you. The arXiv study found that 46% of ChatGPT's mentions of a brand the user didn't name came with no cited page naming that brand. Training-era reputation still counts, and it builds up slowly through coverage over time.

Perplexity adds a third signal

Perplexity follows Google's rankings much more closely than either assistant, so it's the one platform where classic search engine optimization (SEO) still carries over directly. Ahrefs found that 65% of Perplexity's short-tail results were also in Google's top 10. ChatGPT's fan-out citations matched only 6.82%.

These sourcing differences make the comparison a three-way split. Perplexity shares about 11% of cited domains with ChatGPT, according to Digital Applied's review of the research. Its favorite sources also change. An Ahrefs snapshot from June 2026 put YouTube at 32.4% of Perplexity's citations, with Reddit second at 16.6%. If you have video explainers, check whether Perplexity is picking them up before you decide to make more.

Measuring AI share of voice

AI share of voice is the number of times AI answers mention your brand, divided by the total mentions of every brand you track, across a fixed set of prompts on one platform. Calculate it per platform, because the platforms barely agree. Orbit Media found that the four models it tested cited the same domain for the same question in only 1.7% of cases.

  1. Write 30 to 100 prompts that real buyers would ask, from category questions to direct comparisons.
  2. Pick 4 to 6 competitors and keep that list fixed.
  3. Run every prompt on each platform on the same day each month, from a logged-out session if you can.
  4. Record mentions and links as separate fields. Use another field for position in the answer.
  5. Divide your mentions by total brand mentions for each platform.

Score sentiment too, but expect it to be high. BrightEdge found Gemini answers were roughly 96% positive toward the brands they mentioned, with ChatGPT at 94%. One negative mention therefore stands out. Treat your share-of-voice figure as a trend line, because the answers change from one run to the next.

Most of the buyers you're trying to reach will be on the free or standard tier. Run your tracking prompts on those tiers, since results on a top-tier reasoning model differ from what your buyers see.

Our verdict

On Gemini vs ChatGPT, start by checking where you're absent before deciding where to invest. Run the same 30 buyer prompts on both platforms this month and log mentions and links separately. If Gemini names your competitors but not you, work on your own pages and Google rankings. If ChatGPT leaves you out, look at your third-party footprint and your robots.txt file. Gemini's citation pattern held steady through 2026, while ChatGPT's changed within weeks. Rerun your ChatGPT prompts more often than your Gemini prompts, and date every result you record.
