What is a SERP

Definition

A SERP is the search engine results page, the page Google or Bing shows after you type a query.

It holds organic listings and paid ads. Extra blocks show maps and AI-written answers. When SEO people talk about the SERP meaning, they mean this whole page. A good ranking puts your link on it where searchers can see it.

What SERP stands for

SERP stands for search engine results page. The term covers any search engine, so both Google and Bing produce SERPs. People say "the SERPs" in the plural when they mean search results in general. Each SERP is built for one query, and it changes with the searcher's location and device.

Why SERP visibility matters

SERP visibility matters because searchers rarely scroll past the first screen of results. A page on page two gets few clicks, however good it is. Position within page one matters because an ad block or a map can push the first organic link below the fold. So check where your result sits on the full page as well as its rank number.

How a SERP is structured

A SERP stacks different types of results from top to bottom, and the order changes with each query. Google decides which blocks to show based on what it thinks the searcher wants. Most pages still follow a rough three-zone layout.

What sits at the top

Paid ads appear first on commercial queries. On informational queries, an AI Overview takes this spot. Product searches add a shopping carousel here. Searchers see this zone first, so it gets the most attention.

What fills the middle

The organic results, once called the "ten blue links," fill the middle. They now share space with blocks like People Also Ask boxes and video carousels. A local search adds a map pack with three business listings.

What closes the page

Related searches and more ads close the page. Below them sits the link to the next page of results, or more results load as you scroll. Few searchers reach this zone, and that's why positions near the bottom earn little traffic.

Organic vs paid SERP results

Google ranks organic results on how relevant and useful the page is, while paid results are ads that advertisers buy per click. Google labels ads "Sponsored." Organic clicks are free, and organic positions take months of content and link work to earn. Ads go live the day a campaign starts and disappear when the budget runs out. Check the label before you judge a competitor's ranking, because an ad slot tells you nothing about their SEO.

SERP features that shift visibility

SERP features are any results beyond the standard organic link, and they change where clicks go. A featured snippet quotes one page's answer above the organic list. Knowledge panels show facts about a person or brand beside the results. When a feature answers the query on the page itself, fewer people click through. Track which features appear for your queries as well as where you rank.

How AI overviews change SERPs

AI Overviews put a summary written by Google's AI at the top of the SERP, above the organic results. The summary answers the question from content across the web and links to the pages it drew on. Searchers get what they need without clicking, and the top organic link drops lower on the screen. A page cited in the overview gets a new kind of visibility. So SEO teams now track AI citations alongside rankings.

A quick SERP example

Search "coffee shop near me" on your phone. Ads appear first, above a map pack of nearby cafes. Organic links to review sites follow the map pack. Now search "how long to boil an egg." The top block becomes an AI Overview or a featured snippet with the answer inside it. It's the same engine with 2 different pages, because each SERP is built around what the query asks for.
